Let's face it!!! It is hard to work and go to school at the same time. How many of you/us have tried to make cash flow in your pockets at least for the most basic things we need money for... like assigments photocopies, books, pencils or just to buy a pizza with your friends once in a while or just a 0.60 cookie in the cafeteria?. Well, I have. And it has not been easy.

In college, time is scarce, and because of that, very precious. At the same time, though, expenses in college pile up surprisingly quickly. A part time job is a good way to off-set costs while ensuring there’s enough time left over for academics and extracurriculars. In other countries finding a job while still in college may not be an issue, but sure it is here in El Salvador. I really wished there was a law that gives the oportunity to college students to work part time in any company we apply for.

The best one can do if applying for a job, they say, is to look for it on campus or around, consider, then, working as a study hall or library monitor. Responsibilities generally include the supervision of study spaces to ensure that a quiet atmosphere is maintained (which we know it is hard to mantain). It's a pretty easy job, but one with lots of down time - meaning it leaves you with time to catch up on reading, do some homework, or study for an examk, if you are the one of a kind student who does not start studying 15 mintues before the test. =S

I did meet students who would rather go to work for few years, pile up the money in order to be able to go to school after they have enough Benjamins. I have also met the kind of students who rather not work, (having the chance) and go to school, but those are the ones whos pockets we see white butteflies come out from. There are also the kind of students who do work during the day and go to school at night. I take my hat off to them. why? because they are able to do it, they want to and so they perform.

I am a believer in doing what you want when you can! meaning that despite we have no support (or very little if there is) from the company we work for to go to school, one can manage to continue with education to the very end of our studies. Nobody this was easy, but neither nobody said this was imposible.
My point here is that for those who want to work and go to school at the same time, it can be done, only if you ask the question: What kind of student am I?
-The working kind? (Because you want/need extra cash)
-The lazy kind?        (I'll rather don't spend in other things)
or maybe you no need to ask this question... in that case considered youserlf a LUCKY ONE!!!

  1. Dear Root..I truly follow your point of you.
There should be a program or something in with collegue students can easily get a job. Indeed, since we are getting old, we need to satisfy different necessities that we have, to support your family, to pay your studies, or just the simple matter of feeling independent....whether your reason is, the world runs around money, and as soon as we get experience the better will be for us.

I personally devote myself to my studies which I consider is fine, but I don't have this sort of confidence this experience gives to you...I accept it!!!!

If we want to do such thing, we must to be as organized as posible because sometimes if you don't manage your time you can get overwhelm....

  2. My dear Ruth, after reading your post I found myself with two different feelings, the first one from my personal point of view (as adult) is that I really agree with the fact that if you have the opportunity to dedicate your time for the study (as your work) will be very beneficial in your future. why? because you will have the chance for you to prepare yourself as much as possible before facing the real world...But, on the other hand with my personal experience, I can tell you that it has advantages the fact that you start working as early as possible in your life. Firstly, you will gain a lot of experience, and in second place you will get the money you need to cover all your "needs" and that will allow you to grow and become mature enough to live. Despite the fact that you are gaining experience if you are working while studying, there are a lot of conditions that you must fit in if you want to succeed in your two obligations, you must be really organized in order to play with two different roles at the same time, remember that you will be in charge not only to study but also to work and you will have to give the best in both. Life is a surprise every single day...in order or that my advice in general is if you have the chance to study first and prepare yourself do it...but if you "have to" share the two obligations, give your best and the reward will be very satisfactory!!! ;)

  3. Hi Ruth! I am in agreement with you because all your points of view are real. In our country, we do not have the chance to apply for a good job while we are studying our major because we do not have the opportunities that we need. The worst about this is that we know that we have the capacity to work, maybe because we need to in order to earn extra money to help our relativies, or because we want to gain experience before we get graduated. I have not had the chance to have a job while I am studying, and I think that it can be complicated to me because I can not do many things at the same time. However, I have met many people and classmates who work and study at the same time; some of them have survived in the University with nice grades, but some others have left the University because they could not do two things at the same time. Well, to sum up, I think that it depends on you, on your needs, good opportunities, or capacity to do many things at the same time.

  4. HI guys,

well the money issue for university students is overwhelming in this country. Enterprises are not flexible with college students who are tremendously in need with earning some cash. Many students are giving up their studies for their parents cannot support their studies, so sad because this issue increases our underdevelopment. Find yourself blessed with this opportuniy to almost finishing your studies.
